Papers : of Charles Francis Bopes, 1950-1975.

The papers contain articles, essays, short stories, poems, notebooks, and drafts by Bopes, many concerning his Japanese sojourn, 1915- 1917. Other subjects include nature, Will Adams, Thomas Wolfe, Edgar Allan Poe, opera, and interesting events in his life. Of special interst are his pastels, water-colors, and pencil and charcoal sketches. A few personal letters are included and some clippings.

Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
